Evaporative Cooling In Wangaratta

We service, repair, replace and install evaporative cooling. That’s the whole cooling side of the business, and it’s deliberate. No refrigerated cooling, no split systems, no reverse cycle. If that’s what you have, we’ll tell you on the phone rather than send someone out.
Most houses around Wangaratta have a cooler on the roof, and most of them get switched on in November after sitting untouched since March. Almost everything that goes wrong with them comes from that.

How Evaporative Cooling Works

Evaporative cooling works on the principle of evaporation. Hot, dry outside air is pulled through cooling pads that are kept wet by a pump. As the air passes through, the water evaporates and absorbs heat from the air, which lowers the temperature. A fan then pushes that cooled air through the house along a network of ducts.
That’s why it suits this part of the state. Our summer air is dry, which is exactly the condition the system needs, and it runs on a fraction of the power a refrigerated unit uses.
The trade-off is that it needs windows or a door open to work properly, and it struggles on a humid day.

Why Evaporative Cooling Servicing Matters

Servicing an evaporative cooler prolongs the life of the system, and it does something a gas appliance service does not. The air coming into your house has just passed through wet pads, so keeping the unit maintained helps keep that air clean and healthy.
Cleaner air inside.
Old pads hold dirt and stagnant water, and everything you breathe passes straight through them.
Longer system life.
Pumps, belts and bearings all wear faster when nobody has looked at them for a few summers.
It actually cools.
Pads that have mineral build-up let water run past instead of through, so the air stops cooling properly.
No mid summer failure.
The first forty-degree day is when everyone finds out, and nobody can fit you in that week.
Leaks caught early.
A stuck float or a rusting tank puts water on your roof and eventually through the ceiling.
Lower running cost.
A cooler with a slipping belt and blocked pads works a good deal harder for less result.

What An Evaporative Cooler Service Includes

One fixed price for the whole standard job on the roof. Pads are a consumable rather than part of the service, so if yours are finished, we tell you what a set costs before we fit them.
Pads
We check and clean them, and quote for replacement if they're genuinely past it.
Pump and float
We test and clean the pump, set the float valve and check the water level.
Tank
We drain and flush the tank, and check for rust and sediment in the bottom.
Belt and bearings
We check the belt tension and bearings, and flag any worn parts with you.
Motor and wiring
We test the motor and check the electrical connections while the lid is off.
Controls and ducts
We test the wall controller and check the ducting and roof mount.

Common Evaporative Cooler Faults And Repairs

These are the issues we get called out for most, and nearly all of them are cheaper to deal with in spring than in January.
Blowing warm air
Usually the pump has failed or the pads are dry. Air moving with no water does nothing.
Musty smell inside
Old pads holding water and dirt. They’re a consumable, and they don’t last forever.
Water on the roof
A stuck float or a leaking tank. Worth catching before it finds its way into the plaster.
Rattle or squeal
Belt or bearings. Cheap to sort now, but potentially a whole new motor if it’s left running like that.
Weak airflow
Usually blocked pads, a worn slipping belt or ducting that has come adrift up in the roof space.
Will not start
Often the controller or wiring rather than the unit itself. Worth a look before you panic.

Evaporative Cooling Replacement And Installation

Most coolers are worth fixing. Some are not. Once the tank has rusted through or the frame has corroded, there is nothing to repair, and paying for a service on a unit in that state is money down the drain.
Where a replacement is the right call, we quote on the unit, installation and removal of the old one as a single price, agreed before anything comes off the roof. In most houses, the existing ducting and vents stay exactly where they are, which keeps it to a day.
We also install from scratch in houses that have never had cooling. Getting the size right matters more than people expect, and that comes down to the floor area, ceiling height and how many rooms it needs to reach.

No. Cooling for us means evaporative only. No split systems, no refrigerated, no reverse cycle. We will say so on the phone rather than waste your time.
$180 including GST. Pads and parts are extra and we tell you the cost before we fit them.
Once a year, ideally in spring before you switch it on. Pumps and pads are the parts that suffer most from sitting idle over winter.
It depends on your water and how hard the unit works, but a few years is typical. We check them at every service and tell you when they are done rather than replacing them on spec.
We will do our best, but that is when the diary is at its worst. A spring service is how you avoid being in that queue.
Yes. We replace units that are finished and we install into houses that have never had cooling. Installs are quoted rather than fixed price.
Evaporative cooling works by pushing cooled outside air through the house, so that air has to go somewhere. Opening a window or two on the far side is what makes it work properly.
