Gas Heater Types We Service

Wall furnaces, space heaters and gas log fires all do the same job in a different shape. They heat one room off gas rather than the whole house, and around here plenty of them have been doing it for thirty years.
All three are serviced by a licensed gas fitter, all three are on a published fixed price, and all three get the same safety checks. If you are not sure which one you have, it does not matter when you book. We will work it out on site.

Wall Furnaces, Space Heaters And Log Fires

Three different shapes, one fixed price each, and the same safety checks on all of them. Prices include GST and exclude parts.
Wall furnace grille set into a hallway wall
Wall Furnaces
$160
inc GST
A wall furnace is built into the wall cavity with only the grille and the controls showing, often between two rooms so it heats both. Plenty around here have been running since the seventies.
The service is a strip down of what you cannot see. The fascia comes off, the burner and chamber get cleaned, the flue is spillage tested, and the gas pressure is set back to spec. Clearances matter here.
Freestanding gas space heater against a wall
Space Heaters
$160
inc GST
A space heater stands on the floor against a wall and flues out through the wall or the roof. You can walk around it, which is the easy way to tell one apart from a wall furnace in the wall cavity.
Same service, slightly easier access. Burner cleaned, heat exchanger inspected, flue and seals checked, gas pressures set, and the cabinet cleaned out. Dust is what causes that first night smell.
Gas log fire burning in a lounge room
Gas Log Fires
$210
inc GST
Log fires cost more to service because there is more to take apart and put back. The glass comes out and gets cleaned properly, the burner and injectors are cleaned, and the logs go back in order.
That last part is not decoration. The log positions are worked out so the fire burns cleanly, and a log out of place is a common cause of sooty glass and a lazy yellow flame. Worth checking.

Why Gas Heater Servicing Matters

Single room heaters tend to be the last appliance anyone thinks about. They are old, they are simple, and they usually still work, so nobody books them in. That is exactly the problem, because they are also the most likely appliance in the house to be spilling combustion products into the room.
It burns cleanly again.
A cleaned burner and a corrected gas pressure means less gas for the same heat in the room.
The smell goes.
Most of the burning smell on the first cold night is dust in the cabinet, not the gas itself.
Parts stay available.
Catching a worn thermocouple early matters on a unit whose parts are getting harder to find.
You find out where it stands.
An honest read on whether it has years left in it or needs replacing before next winter.

Carbon Monoxide And Gas Safety

Every gas heater burns fuel inside your house and relies on a flue to carry the products of that burn outside. When a heat exchanger cracks or a flue blocks, carbon monoxide can spill back into the room. It has no smell and no colour, and the early symptoms pass for a winter cold.
Older wall furnaces and space heaters are the appliances where this turns up most, because they are the ones least likely to have been serviced. A spillage test and a carbon monoxide check are part of the standard service on all three heater types here, not an extra.
Energy Safe Victoria
Energy Safe Victoria advises having gas heaters checked by a licensed gas fitter at least every two years, including a carbon monoxide test. If you smell gas, turn it off at the meter and ring us.

Common Gas Heater Faults And Repairs

Between the three heater types these are what we see most often. Most of them are a small part and less than an hour of work.
Pilot will not stay lit
Usually a thermocouple. A small part, a quick job, and the callout we get most often.
Sooty glass on a log fire
Nearly always logs sitting out of position, or a burner that needs a proper clean.
Yellow lazy flame
A gas flame should be crisp and blue. Yellow means it is not burning cleanly at all.
Smell that hangs around
Dust burning off on the first light is normal. A smell that stays around is not.
Blocked flue
Birds and leaves, particularly on a flue that has sat unused right through summer.
Noisy or weak fan
Where a fan is fitted, the bearings dry out and the airflow drops off with them.

Gas Heater Replacement And Installation

Most of these heaters are worth servicing rather than replacing, and we will tell you that plainly. But if the heat exchanger has gone or the parts are no longer made, it is finished, and we quote on a new one instead.
We also install from scratch. A gas log fire into a room that has never had one, a space heater where the old wall furnace has been sealed up, or a heater in a new extension. That means running the gas, sorting the flue and getting the clearances right.
Either way the quote covers the unit, the install, taking the old one away and the compliance paperwork, agreed before we start. If a ducted system would suit the house better we will say so rather than sell you three single room heaters.

A space heater stands on the floor and you can walk around it. A wall furnace is built into the wall with only the grille showing. Both are $160 including GST to service.
$210 including GST rather than $160, because there is more to dismantle. The glass comes out, the logs come out and everything goes back in the maker pattern.
Every one to two years, same as any gas heater. Energy Safe Victoria advises at least every two years including a carbon monoxide test.
Usually yes. Age alone is not a reason to replace one. What matters is whether it burns cleanly and whether the flue is doing its job. If parts are no longer made and it is genuinely finished, we will tell you.
Dust burning off the heat exchanger, and it should clear in ten or fifteen minutes. A smell that hangs around is worth a phone call.
Yes, that is a separate page. Ducted heating servicing is $240 including GST.
