Storage Tank
A tank that heats water and holds it ready. Most houses around here have one, and its life is decided almost entirely by the sacrificial anode inside it.
That anode is a metal rod that corrodes on purpose so the steel tank does not. Once it is gone the tank rusts from the inside out, and there is no repair for that, which is why we check it every service.
Continuous Flow
The smaller box on the wall that heats water only when a tap opens. Nothing is stored, so nothing runs out, and it takes up a good deal less room.
In exchange it is fussier about gas supply and water pressure, which is worth knowing before anyone talks you into swapping over. We check the supply will carry it before quoting, not after.
Common Gas Hot Water Faults And Repairs
Some of these are a small part and an hour of work. One of them is the end of the system. A service is how you find out which one you are looking at before it decides for you.
Pilot will not stay lit
Usually a thermocouple. A small part and a quick job, but it can leave you without hot water if it is left.
Runs cold early
Usually sediment sitting in the bottom of the tank, or a burner that is no longer doing its job properly.
Rusty or brown water
The tank is going from the inside out. This one ends in a replacement, not a repair.
Banging or kettling
Sediment boiling under the burner. A flush usually sorts it out well enough and gets it running quietly again.
Relief valve dripping
A little is normal, but a constant run is not. It may be a simple valve replacement and an easy fix.
Water under the unit
If it is coming from the tank rather than the valve, the tank has likely failed, so start planning a replacement.
Hot Water Replacement And Installation
When a tank goes, there is nothing to fix, so the question becomes what goes back in its place. A like-for-like swap is the quickest and usually the cheapest route: same type, same spot, same connections, often done in a single visit.
Changing from a storage tank to continuous flow is worth doing in some houses and not in others. It frees up the space the tank was taking, and you never run out, but it needs the right gas supply, so we check that before we quote rather than after.
We also install from scratch, in a new build or an extension where there is no system at all. Either way, the quote covers the unit, installation, removal of the old system and compliance paperwork, all in one number agreed upon before anything is disconnected.

How long should a system last?
Ten to fifteen years for a storage tank, often longer for continuous flow. Servicing, and the anode in particular, is what pushes it towards the top of that range.
My pilot light keeps going out, is that a service?
That is a repair rather than a service. Ring us, it is often a thermocouple and it is a small job. Repair work is $130 an hour including GST, with a one hour minimum.
Can you replace it the same day?
Often yes, if it is a common size and we can get one. Ring early in the day and we will tell you straight rather than string you along.
Should I switch to continuous flow?
Sometimes. It never runs out and it frees up space, but it needs the right gas supply. We check that before quoting rather than promising first and finding out later.
Do you install hot water from scratch?
Yes. New builds, extensions, or anywhere there is no system at all. Installs are quoted rather than fixed price.
