What Gas Heating Covers

Gas heating covers any appliance in the house that burns natural gas or LPG to produce heat. In this part of the state, that means most homes, as gas has been a quick and affordable way to heat a house through a North-east Victorian winter for decades.
It splits into two groups. Central heating warms the whole house from one unit, usually a ducted system in the roof space or under the floor. Single-room heating warms one part of the house at a time, including wall furnaces, space heaters and gas log fires. We service, repair and replace all of them.

Types Of Gas Heating We Service

If you are not sure which one you have, the easy test is whether the heat comes out of vents in more than one room. If it does, it is ducted. If it comes out of one appliance you can see, it is on the gas heaters page.

Gas Heating Servicing

A service is the full standard job on the appliance, however long it takes us. The price is fixed and published, so you’re not waiting on a quote before you can decide.
The work is much the same whichever heater you have. The burner and combustion chamber are cleaned, the heat exchanger is inspected, gas pressures are measured and set to the manufacturer’s specifications, and every safety device is tested. Then the fan, filter and controls are checked, and we tell you honestly what condition the unit is in.
It runs efficiently again.
Dirty burners make a heater work harder for less warmth. Cleaning them helps bring it back to proper operation.
Lower gas bills.
Correcting the fuel-to-air ratio helps prevent the unit from burning more gas than necessary.
Longer life.
Gas heating is expensive to replace. Regular servicing can help extend its working life.
Fewer breakdowns.
Worn parts can be found while they are still relatively inexpensive to replace, rather than in the middle of a cold snap.
Cheaper repairs.
A small part replaced during a routine service can cost a fraction of the failure it may cause if left unattended.
A straight answer.
You’re told how much life is left in the unit, so you can plan ahead rather than react when it fails.

Carbon Monoxide And Gas Safety

This is the part that matters most and gets talked about least. A gas heater burns fuel inside your house, and the flue carries the products of combustion outside. If a heat exchanger cracks or a flue becomes blocked, carbon monoxide can spill back into the room you are sitting in.
Carbon monoxide has no smell or colour. The early symptoms can look like a winter cold, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. A carbon monoxide test and flue check are part of every gas heating service we do, on every appliance, not an added extra.
Energy Safe Victoria
Energy Safe Victoria advises having gas heaters checked by a licensed gas fitter at least every two years, including a carbon monoxide test. If you smell gas, turn it off at the meter and ring us.

Common Gas Heating Faults And Repairs

Heaters run hard for four months, then sit still for eight, and most of the trouble starts there. These are the issues we get called out for most.
Pilot will not stay lit
Usually a thermocouple. It's a small part, a quick fix and our most common callout.
Blowing cold air
Often a blocked return-air filter causing a ducted unit to overheat and shut down.
Yellow lazy flame
A gas flame should be crisp and blue. Yellow means it is not burning cleanly.
Cracked heat exchanger
The serious one, and the reason the heat exchanger is inspected on every service.
Smell that STAYS
Dust burning off on first light is normal. A smell that lingers is worth a phone call.
Noisy fan or belt
It squeals for a season, then lets go, and you get no airflow at all.

Gas Heating Replacement And Installation

Not every heater is worth saving. If the heat exchanger has cracked, parts are no longer made, or it is more than twenty years old and failing every winter, the honest answer is a new one rather than another repair bill. We also install systems from scratch where there is no heater at all.
We’ll say that plainly rather than sell you a service on an appliance that has reached the end of its life. Where a replacement is the right call, we quote on the unit, installation and removal of the old one as a single price, agreed before anything is disconnected.
On a ducted system, the existing ducts and vents usually stay where they are, which keeps the job and cost down. On a new installation, we run the ducting and gas from scratch and size the unit to suit the rooms it needs to heat.
